Explore Lima – The Vibrant Capital of Peru

Lima, the vibrant capital of Peru along the Pacific coast, offers a captivating escape from the arid landscapes of the Ica Desert. This city blends modernity and history with charming neighborhoods to explore. The cuisine is incredible, with plenty of excellent restaurants. Although activities are limited, a few nights here are well worth your time.

How to get to Lima

By Air

Getting to Lima is straightforward due to its international airport and well-connected transportation. Jorge Chávez International Airport is the primary gateway, receiving flights from major cities worldwide. Upon arrival, reach the city center by taxi, airport shuttle, or ride-sharing services.

By Bus

Lima is also accessible by bus from various parts of Peru, with many long-distance bus companies operating routes to the city. We use 12GO to book all our trips by bus. While buses are generally of good quality in Peru, Cruz del Sur is the most reliable.

What to do in Lima

Stroll around Miraflores

Miraflores is rich in history and culture. Explore the pre-Incan pyramid of Huaca Pucllana and admire the grandeur of Plaza Mayor, Lima’s historical center. Walk towards the Pacific Ocean to visit Parque del Amor (Park of Love) and the famous sculpture ‘El Beso’ (The Kiss) by Victor Delfin. Larcomar shopping mall also offers great restaurants with ocean views.

Go Paragliding Along the Coast

Paragliding along Lima’s coast is a thrilling experience. Flights last 15-20 minutes, reaching heights of 600-800 meters, offering breathtaking views of neighborhoods like Magdalena, San Isidro, Miraflores, and San Miguel. This year-round activity is weather-dependent but a must for adrenaline seekers.

Visit the Barranco Neighbourhood

Barranco is known for its culture and creativity. Enjoy street art, visit the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MAC), and cross the iconic Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of Sighs). Barranco also offers beaches for surfing and sunbathing. Don’t miss the Barranco Beer Company for exceptional brews. The nightlife here comes alive with live music at bars like El Dragón de Barranco and La Noche.

Swim with sea lions at the Palomino Islands

The Palomino Islands are home to a thriving colony of sea lions. Boat rides, costing around $50 USD per person without transportation or about $60 USD with transportation, offer the chance to swim with these playful animals. Boats depart daily from Callao, with tours often including transfers, wetsuits, snorkels, and lunch. The best time to visit is during the Peruvian summer (December to February) when water temperatures peak at 24-28 degrees Celsius. Although the islands can be visited year-round, trips depend on the weather. Unfortunately, we visited during a stormy period and couldn’t take the boat ride.

Tip: Bring your own mask and snorkel to see the sea lions underwater!

Where to eat in Lima

Peru is renowned for its cuisine, and Lima boasts many fancy restaurants. Make reservations at popular spots like Astrid y Gastón, Central, El Mercado, and Isolina to avoid missing out. These were our choices:

  • Barranco Beer Company – We always love to visit a good beer bar and with their offer of artisanal beers this is a great place to go. They also offer some nice snacks to accompany your beer.
  • Larcomar – There are several good restaurants in Larcomar with great ocean views. Restaurants such as Tanta, Mangos and KO Asian Kitchen are a great choice for a good dinner.
  • Colonia & Co – It is known for its charming ambiance in the Barranco neighbourhood offering delicious Peruvian and international cuisine, and a varied menu with options for different tastes.
  • Barra Maretazo – Known for its fresh seafood dishes, particularly ceviche, and with a reputation of providing a casual and relaxed dining experience. However, Barra Maretazo also offers traditional Peruvian dishes such as Lomo Saltado.

Where to stay in Lima

Miraflores and Barranco are our favourite neighbourhoods to stay at during your visit in Lima. Both neighbourhoods are safe to walk through. The next accommodations were our personal favourites!

Selina Miraflores offers rooms with and without an en-suite bathroom in the heart of Miraflores. The large building has a great artword outside and has nicely decorated rooms starting at ~€25 a night for a shared bathroom and at ~€50 a night for an en-suite.

Casa Porta is another gem in Miraflores, the colonial style building is just two blocks away from the beach. Double rooms start at €60 a night.
