Hungary – Practical Information

Planning a trip to Hungary? Here’s a comprehensive guide to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, covering essential aspects such as currency, visa requirements, travel seasons, electricity, communication options, transportation, and driving tips.?

Currency

Hungary’s official currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). While some establishments in tourist areas may accept euros, it’s advisable to carry forints for most transactions. Credit cards are widely accepted in urban centers, but having cash is beneficial, especially in smaller towns and markets. ATMs are readily available for convenient cash withdrawals.?

During our visit to Budapest, we did not have Forints at hand and were able to pay everything by card. We did, however, always had some euros at hand.

Visa Requirements

Hungary is a member of the Schengen Area. EU nationals do not need a visa to enter Hungary. American, Canadian, and Australian passport holders may stay for up to 90 days without a visa. Ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay. Non-EU nationals should have a passport valid for at least six months beyond departure.

The Different Travel Seasons

Hungary experiences a continental climate with distinct seasons:?

❄️ Winter (December to February): Cold weather sets in, often accompanied by snow. Budapest’s Christmas markets and thermal baths offer unique experiences during the winter months.

🌳 Spring (March to May): Mild temperatures and blooming landscapes make this an excellent time to visit. Tourist crowds are smaller, allowing for a more relaxed experience.?

☀️ Summer (June to August): Warm to hot weather prevails, with popular destinations like Budapest and Lake Balaton attracting more visitors. Festivals and outdoor events are abundant during this period.?

🍂 Autumn (September to November): Cooler temperatures and vibrant fall colors characterize this season. It’s an ideal time for wine enthusiasts to explore Hungary’s renowned wine regions.?

Electricity

Hungary operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz. The standard plug type is the European two-pin plug (Type C and F). Travelers from countries with different plug types should bring appropriate adapters to charge their electronic devices,

Local SIM Cards

Purchasing a Hungarian SIM card is an affordable way to access mobile data and make local calls. Major providers include Telekom, Vodafone, and Yettel. SIM cards are available at airports, kiosks, and mobile shops (ID required for purchase). If you have a SIM card from another EU country, it will work in Hungary without extra roaming charges, thanks to EU regulations.

Nowadays you can also buy your eSIM from home. This is a bit more costly, but it is super convenient to already have mobile access upon landing. Make sure your phone supports eSIMs and check out the available eSIM options.

Transportation Guide

Hungary offers various transportation options for travelers:

🚗 Renting a car: Renting a car is one of the best ways to explore Hungary, especially if you want to visit rural areas, national parks, or smaller towns that are less accessible by public transport. Rental prices are reasonable, and Hungary’s road network is well-maintained. Highways require a vignette (toll sticker), which can be purchased online or at gas stations. 🚌 Public Buses: Hungary has an extensive bus network connecting cities, towns, and even remote villages. Volánbusz is the main intercity bus company, offering a reliable and affordable way to travel. Tickets can be purchased online, at bus stations, or from the driver in some cases.

🚅 Trains: Trains are a comfortable way to travel between major cities and regions. MÁV (Hungarian State Railways) operates most routes, with direct connections from Budapest to cities like Debrecen, Szeged, and Pécs. High-speed trains run to international destinations, and Eurail passes are valid on many routes. Some trains can be booked directly through 12GO.

🚖 Taxis and Ridesharing: Taxis are available in most cities, but always use official taxi services, like F?taxi or City Taxi, to avoid scams. Ridesharing apps like Bolt provide a more transparent and often cheaper alternative.

Renting a Car and Driving

Renting a car and self-driving in Hungary can be a great way to explore the country at your own pace. Hungary has a well-maintained road network, making it easy to reach both major cities and rural areas. Ensure you have the necessary documentation, including a valid driver’s license and insurance. Be cautious when driving in remote areas, especially on smaller country roads.
