Colombia – Practical Information

Planning a trip to Colombia? Our comprehensive guide provides practical information, insider tips, and valuable insights to ensure your journey is smooth and enjoyable. From currency and visa requirements to navigating the diverse travel seasons, we’ve got you covered.

Currency

Colombia’s official currency is the Colombian Peso (COP or $). You can exchange your money for Colombian Pesos at banks and exchange offices. While credit cards are widely accepted in tourist areas and major cities, it’s wise to carry some cash, especially for smaller towns and local markets. ATMs are also available for convenient cash withdrawals.

Visa Requirements

Colombia offers a visa-free experience for travelers from many countries, including the United States, most European Union member states, and several others, for short stays. However, always check the latest visa requirements based on your nationality and the purpose of your visit to ensure a hassle-free entry into Colombia.

The Different Travel Seasons

Colombia’s diverse landscapes and climates mean it has various travel seasons:

☀️ High Season (December to March and July to August): These are the dry seasons, ideal for visiting popular destinations like Cartagena, Medellin, and Bogota. The weather is generally pleasant during these months.
🌳 Green Season (April to June and September to November): These months may bring more rain, but they also offer lush, green landscapes. It’s a great time to explore the Amazon rainforest, coffee regions, and other natural attractions.

Consider your interests and the weather when planning your trip.

Electricity

Colombia uses a 110V, 60Hz electrical system with two-flat-pin plugs similar to those in the United States. If your devices have different plug types, you may need adapters and voltage converters to use them in Colombia.

Local SIM Cards

Staying connected in Colombia is easy with local SIM cards. You can purchase SIM cards from various providers, and they are widely available in major cities and tourist areas. Simply provide your identification, and you’ll have access to mobile data and calls. This is a cost-effective way to stay connected during your trip.

We recommend getting a local SIM card from a provider with good coverage. You can easily top up your card with the necessary data. Major providers in Colombia include Claro, Movistar, and Tigo. We chose a Claro SIM card and had coverage in most areas we visited.

Nowadays you can also buy your eSIM from home. This is a bit more costly, but it is super convenient to already have mobile access upon landing. Make sure your phone supports eSIMs and check out the available eSIM options.

Transportation Guide

Colombia offers various transportation options for travelers:

🚌 Public Buses: Public buses are the primary mode of transportation in Colombia, connecting cities, towns, and regions. They offer an affordable way to explore the country’s diverse landscapes and attractions. You can book most buses through 12GO, a reliable online transportation platform.
🚖 Taxis and Ridesharing: Taxis are readily available in cities and major towns. In urban areas like Bogota and Medellin, you can also use ridesharing services like Uber. Always ensure the taxi meter is used or agree on a fare before starting your journey. Uber is considered safer than taxis, and we relied on it for most of our trips in major cities.
✈️ Domestic Flights: For covering long distances quickly, consider domestic flights. This is particularly useful when traveling between different regions of the country.

Other Considerations

In addition to the practical information mentioned, consider the following:

🛡️ Travel Insurance: It’s essential to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost belongings.
🩺 Health Preparations: Ensure you have any necessary vaccinations and carry a basic medical kit for common ailments.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can ensure a safe, enjoyable, and well-prepared journey through Colombia.
