Traveling Around Ecuador: Best Transportation Options for a Safe and Enjoyable Journey

Exploring Ecuador is a unique adventure, offering less crowded paths compared to its neighbors, Colombia and Peru. Throughout our journey, we discovered various modes of transportation, each contributing to a safe and enriching travel experience.

Arrival by plane

Quito Airport

Aeropuerto Internacional Mariscal Sucre is the main gateway to Quito, located about 45 kilometers from the city center. From here, several transportation options are available to reach your accommodation.

  • Public Transportation: The most affordable option (~2 USD in 2019). SOTRANOR buses take you to Rio Coco Avenue, where you can transfer to the Metropolitan Transportation System Ecovía to reach the old town. Alternatively, COSIBO buses go to the southern bus terminal of Quitumbe, connecting you to the old town via the Trolebús.
  • Private Transfers: Yellow taxis or ride-hailing apps like Cabify and Uber offer rides for 25-35 USD (2019). Many hotels provide shared or private transfer services for around 20-30 USD.

After the 2019 riots, I opted for a hostel pickup for convenience. The ride to the city center typically takes about 45 minutes, depending on traffic.

Guayaquil Airport

José Joaquín de Olmedo Airport in Guayaquil is Ecuador’s second-largest airport and a primary gateway to the Galapagos Islands and destinations along the west coast. The airport is about 5 kilometers from the city center.

  • Public Transport: Metrovia buses from the airport can take you to various parts of the city for a few dollars. For those staying in the northern part of town, the green line to Rio Daule terminal is recommended.
  • Private Transport: A tourist information desk at the airport can arrange a taxi for around 10 USD. Alternatively, you can use the free airport WiFi to book a ride through Cabify or Uber.

Traveling within Ecuador

Ecuador offers several transportation options for exploring the country, from luxury buses to flights.

By Plane

For those with a tight schedule or plans to visit the Galapagos, flying is the best option. Domestic round trips cost around 100 USD, with operators like LATAM, Avianca, and TAME. Flights to the Galapagos are more expensive, typically 300-400 USD. Combining flights (e.g., Quito-Galapagos-Guayaquil) can be cost-effective.

Bus Transport

To truly experience Ecuador’s diverse landscapes, bus travel is ideal. The Pan-American Highway crosses the country, though it can be bumpy, especially in the highlands. Bus travel is inexpensive (~1.50 USD per hour) and luxury buses offer reclining seats, entertainment, and toilets. Tickets can be purchased at bus stations or buy your bus tickets online on 12GO for a hassle-free experience.

Tourist Buses

Tourist bus companies like Wanderbus and Ecuador Hop provide a more convenient, albeit pricier, option. These semi-hop-on-hop-off services often include activities en route. For example, a trip from Quito to Montañita with Ecuador Hop costs 159 USD (2020), compared to 60 USD with local buses. Ecuador Hop picks you up and drops you off at your hotel, unlike local buses that drop you at main terminals, requiring additional taxi or ride-hailing services.

By Boat

Traveling between the Galapagos Islands is best done by boat. The main islands—San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, and Isabela—are easily accessible, with trips costing 20-30 USD each way.
