Exploring India is an adventure on its own, and your choice of transportation can truly shape your experience. Throughout our journey, we experimented with various modes of travel, uncovering the most effective and secure ways to navigate this diverse land.
Air Travel
India’s domestic air network offers both affordability and convenience, boasting a plethora of airlines to cater to different needs. We secured two domestic flights – Jaipur to Varanasi and Varanasi to Delhi – for approximately 40 euros per person, inclusive of luggage.
Rail Journeys
The Indian railway system, renowned for its vastness and cost-effectiveness, remains a favorite among travelers. Much to our delight, we found the trains to be remarkably comfortable and efficiently managed, complete with allocated seating and minimal overcrowding. Night trains, in particular, are favored by tourists for their dual benefits of saving on accommodation costs and travel time. This online service not only facilitates hassle-free train reservations but also extends its assistance to buses, ferries, and flights, ensuring a smooth journey from start to finish.
Uber Intercity
A newfound gem in our travel arsenal was Uber Intercity, tailored for longer distances. Our ride from Delhi to Agra via Uber Intercity proved to be a hassle-free and comfortable experience, alleviating the typical travel woes. It’s worth noting that additional toll fees may apply, and clarifying any potential return journey charges with your driver beforehand is advisable. Despite these considerations, Uber Intercity emerges as an economical and convenient travel option, significantly enhancing our exploration of India’s wonders.
Uber (or the local Ola)
We relied a lot on Uber during our trip, and it was a great choice. It’s safe, easy to use, and doesn’t cost too much. But sometimes, we had trouble talking to drivers who didn’t speak much English, which could be annoying. Here’s a tip: If you find an Uber driver who speaks good English and you trust, ask for their number. You might be able to hire them for a whole day at the same price as Uber. This can save you time and hassle. It usually costs around 2,000 INR (~€23) for a full day, depending on where you want to go.
Tuktuk
Tuktuks are common in India and a fun way to get around. But be ready to bargain, and don’t pay more than what you’d spend on an Uber. We had a rule of paying 50 INR for short trips and 100 INR for longer ones. If you find a tuktuk driver you like, ask if you can hire them for a day at a fair price.
