How to get to Colca Canyon

Colca Canyon is a very big place, so there are many ways to go there. Many tourists decide to join a 2- or 3-day tour from Arequipa with a tour company. However, it’s totally possible to organize everything on your own!

Choose between Chivay or Cabanaconde

The starting point for many visitors is Chivay, offering fabulous views despite being at the shallow end of the canyon. For those interested in hiking, Cabanaconde is the preferred base, located 1.5 hours from Chivay. While Chivay has more amenities, Cabanaconde provides access to several independent hiking trails leading to various villages within the canyon.

Buses from Arequipa to Colca Canyon and back

Buses to Colca Canyon depart from the main Terrestre bus station in Arequipa. Companies such as Milagros, Reyna, and Andalucia offer tickets to Chivay for approximately €5 per person. It’s wise to check the bus schedules a day before your trip due to frequent changes. Typically, there are two morning departures and one early afternoon departure.

Local Transportation in Colca Canyon

In Colca Canyon, local buses connect various villages, offering a budget-friendly way to get around. A popular route runs between Chivay or Cabanaconde and Mirador Cruz del Condor, ideal for early morning departures to beat the crowds. These buses also link Chivay and Cabanaconde with other villages like Yanque, Maca, and Tapay. Though they may not be the most comfortable, they provide an authentic experience of local life and stunning scenery.

For more convenience, many accommodations offer transportation services, including private shuttles, guided tours, or personalized car services. This option ensures you reach key destinations without waiting for buses or dealing with schedules. While more costly, these services save time and offer a relaxed travel experience.

Traveling further to Cusco or Puno

For onward travel to Cusco or Puno, you have two main options. Budget travelers can return to Arequipa and catch another bus. For a more direct route, 4M Express offers direct connections from Chivay to Cusco (approximately 10 hours) or Puno (approximately 6 hours) for $65 USD per person.

If you prefer flying, you can backtrack to Arequipa and take a flight to Cusco. Although this option involves additional travel to the airport and requires arriving 1-2 hours before departure, it can be quicker and more comfortable. Multiple daily flights are available, and while this method might be more expensive, it saves considerable time compared to overland travel.

What to do in Colca Canyon

Enjoy the scenic road to the canyon

The journey from Arequipa to Colca Canyon is an adventure in itself. As you ascend to heights exceeding 4900 meters, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Andean landscape. Keep an eye out for native wildlife, including vicuñas, llamas, and alpacas grazing along the route. Remember to purchase your entrance ticket to the canyon, priced at 70 Peruvian soles, which is usually not included in tour prices.

Where to stay in Colca Canyon

If you want to go hiking in Cabanaconda, then you should check out Homestay Pachamama. You will be warmly welcomed by the very heartly hosts. The accommodation offers a delicious breakfast and dinner and they can tell you all about the hikes around the town. They can also arrange everything you need during your stay here. The homestay is very affordable starting at €25 a night for a double room.

Right in the center of Chivay you will find Colca Canyon Hotel with friendly hosts. The hotel is just a few blocks from the center with all restaurants. A single room starts at €25 a night, and you have a double room starting at €40 a night. An ideal location if you are taking a bus in or out of Chivay!

If you want some more luxury than the Colca Lodge is your go-to place. With on-site luxury hot springs you will definitely enjoy your stay here. Double rooms start at €150 and often include breakfast.
